Irish Water in Begging Letter Scam
IRISH WATER HAS denied sending out hundreds of thousands of “begging” letters to households around the country. The letters, reminiscent of well-known Nigerian email scams, arrived through people’s letterboxes this morning.
Spokesperson for Irish Water, Elizabeth Arnett, denied that the letters originated from Irish Water’s offices.
“We would never initiate unsolicited communications. It’s simply not our style”, she said.
The move is seen by many as a last gasp attempt by the beleaguered utility to get Irish householders to contribute toward the hundreds of millions of euros already spent in setting up the company and paying bonuses, ahead of its expected privatisation.
