IN AN ADDRESS to the faithful today in St Peter’s Square, Pope Francis stunned the crowd by stating that much of Catholic doctrine is nonsense. Shocked audiences heard the pontiff (78) question tenets of his own faith in front of a gathering of several thousand pilgrims and tourists.

“If you could only see. If you could only look into the heart of this institution, you would see only shadows and the dust of withered vines. I must admit it, it is mostly nonsense this edifice of ours ”, he said.

Pope Francis has raised more than a few eyebrows within the Vatican since his elevation to Pontiff in 2013.  Last year in an address to the European Parliament, he called Europe a barren grandmother and said that the church was overly obsessed with rules.

Reacting to the pontiff’s latest outburst, Cardinal Sean Brady played down its significance.

“It is as one expects of an overreaching of the guarantee of the divine essence borne of the gesture of the Spirit in its manifestation of the quasi anti-zeitgeist in mora dilectum. Yet it is urbane and has prolific aberrances to soliloquise the pastoralness of its perpetuity.” said the Cardinal.
