THE NEW QUANGO set up to abolish quangos cannot itself be abolished. That’s according to the quango’s legal experts who say that the legislation that established the quango is designed to abolish only quangos that existed prior to the legislation to abolish quangos.  Reacting to the news, Fianna Fáil spokesperson on Public Expenditure and Reform, Seán Fleming, said that it would bankrupt the country.

“This is crazy stuff. Looks like there is no legal route to abolish this new quango. The whole idea of the legislation, we were told, was to reduce costs and save money for the tax payer. But if the new quango cannot be abolished, it will bankrupt the country”.

“Just think about the remuneration packages, the expenses, and all the other entitlements. And then, times that by infinity. That’s some number to get your head around”, he said.

The Irish government has pledged to greatly reduce the number of quangos by a process of merging similar quangos or by abolishing them altogether. So far, it has succeeded in establishing 22 new ones.

A quango is a quasi-autonomous non-governmental organisation set up by governments to take the heat for poor performance. Fianna Fáil are an Irish political party that recently bankrupted the country.
