Renua Deny McElvaney for General Election Slot

LUCINDA CREIGHTON TODAY dismissed claims that disgraced Fine Gael Monaghan county councillor, Hugh McElvaney, is to stand as an election candidate for Renua in Cavan / Monaghan.  The speculation follows the deselection of  Mary Smyth over an outburst on Facebook, in which she reportedly said that the Vatican was “corrupt, riddled with gay sex and had an adoration for wealth”.

Contacted about Smyth’s outburst and the possibility of running for Renua, McElvaney refused to be drawn. He then simply asked, “What’s in it for me?”

McElvaney was one of a number of county councillors at the centre of an RTE anti-corruption sting, which showed the councillor asking for money for services to facilitate planning for a wind farm. Renua is a political party made up mostly of former Fine Gael politicians.
