IF RETURNED TO power, the Fine Gael party has promised to decriminalise white collar crime.

Minister for Justice, Frances Fitzgerald, has seen the radical proposal added to Fine Gael’s election manifesto for 2016. The policy is understood to have been formulated following recent meetings on policing reform with senior Garda management.

“Let’s be honest here”, she said, “it’s effectively legal as it is, in so far as the state doesn’t really prosecute for this type of activity.  So rather than keeping these laws on the statue books or employing financial experts at the Garda Fraud Squad, it’s more efficient to just remove those laws entirely. That way, we can concentrate resources on pursuing actual criminals; non fine payers, TV licence defaulters, street beggars, protesters, and the like.”

“Besides, there’s no real evidence that there’s any white collar crime taking place in Ireland. We simply will not prosecute what we cannot find, and we cannot find what we will not prosecute”, she added.
